This is a picture of Irene with her friend Charlotte that was passed to me by Charlotte’s daughter Ann Hudson.
Anne said, “I hope I reached the right family – I googled Irene McGuire after I scanned this old photo (attached) – it would be great if I could get this photo to her family.”
“My mom, Charlotte Doran, lived on Rhinelander Avenue in the Bronx and Irene lived a block or two away. I called my mom’s sister Marie who remembered Irene as fun and very, very smart. She also remembered that Irene’s mother was a real Irish wit and told great stories. She remembered that Irene’s mother drove a car, which was unusual in those days. (men drove but not women) She remembered that once Irene’s Mom told them that a policeman stopped her and told her she was driving down a one way street, to which she replied: “But I’m only going one way”. She thinks that Irene’s brother may have worked for Square Auto Supply after his parents died and their bar closed (Charlotte’s father owned Square Auto), but she’s not sure about this.
I’m really happy to hear that this photo of Irene has a home. I keep a family tree and am always looking for old photos of our family. I thought it would be a shame if Irene’s family could not be found, but your website made it so easy. Thanks for making my day.”
